Countdown to Battle #3: Bucko Toby

Bucko TobyThe seeds of Bucko Toby were planted by a couple of co-workers who shared an interest not so much in playing music as in the ways it can be recorded.

Guitarist Josh Friedrich and bassist Brandon Bischoff, who worked together at a restaurant in Festus, would get together in their down time to discuss Beatles records "and how bands get some of the gnarly sounds that you hear on psychedelic '60s albums," Friedrich recalled. The duo also shared an admiration for bands such as the Flaming Lips and Animal Collective "who made an effort to change their sound from album to album."

Drummer Kevin Payne, the boyfriend of another co-worker, entered the picture last summer. The trio soon after began working as Bucko Toby. "I have a pretty large catalog of music that I've played with past bands, stuff I never played with anyone and songs I was currently working on," Friedrich said. "So we just picked randomly from those tunes and started playing them, and it sounded good. More importantly, we had fun doing it."

Friedrich said the band takes a loose, freewheeling approach to its music. "Kevin showed me Foxygen," he said, "and the way they do their albums was really big for us. They just go in and have fun and jam them and don't keep the tightest takes but the ones that have the most energy and sound the most interesting." He said in a Facebook post recently that the band hopes to raise money to record a CD.

Bucko Toby has posted three live cuts at bandcamp.com. Here's one of them:
