This 12-song, 52-minute effort from July 2014 is packed with enough catchy riffs to keep you air-dancing for days.
Bassist Ryan Cosgrove and drummer Sean Kennedy keep the rhythm tight while Dylan Clubb tosses out fuzzy, piercing solos on guitar and electric keyboard. Principal songwriter Kory Meyer contributes rhythm guitar while tying it all together with distinct nasally vocals.
Highlights include "Golden Gate," featuring an infectious Clubb keyboard riff; and "They Don't Bother Me," in which Cosgrove and Kennedy are front and center pushing the action. "Forget" is a lazy, shuffling number that builds to a driving coda that struggles to stay under control.
It all leads to the closing "Your Arms," a slow, bluesy tour de force that lets the entire band show off. Clubb's guitar is particularly raunchy, Meyer delivers his best vocal performance, and Kennedy backs it all with some powerful drumming.
There's nothing complicated here. It's exactly what you expect from a good rock 'n' roll record -- four guys in a studio having a great time playing a collection of solid songs. If you like your rock 'n' roll straight with no chasers, this one is in your wheelhouse.
Looking ahead: The Langaleers plan to start recording again in November, Meyer told me last week. He said they hope to release a split album with Bucko Toby, their friends from Festus with whom they frequently share a stage.
Next up is An Undercover Weekend at the Firebird. The band will play a 30-minute set of Creedence Clearwater Revival covers Friday, the first night of the event. Meyer said The Langaleers will be the annual event's 100th performer since it began in 2007.
The Langaleers have a few shows booked over the coming months. Keep an eye on the band's Facebook page for details.
Cory Pruneau is the Langaleers' current bass player.
