SVJ Album of the Week: Pogo Funk's Sound from the Underground

Pogo Funk Sound From the Underground CD
Sun Valley Jams has one more show scheduled for this season -- a free concert Sept. 26 featuring Whiskey Kick and the Josh Tyler Band -- that we will start previewing later this week. But after that, the Balvens will be shutting down the outdoors concert venue for a few months.

So the ball's in my court to keep Sun Valley Jams going for the winter with this website. And I'm going to do that. I'm going to produce a couple of regular features to keep everyone entertained and informed, starting now.

Introducing: The SVJ Album of the Week.

Every Sunday, I'll post a streaming album on the front page of SunValleyJams.com that has some relevance to something that week. The plan now is for most of the featured albums to be those of local bands. But I'll go national and even global once in awhile as the inspiration strikes.

Featured albums will come from a variety of sources. This week's album -- Pogo Funk's 2003 effort, Sound from the Underground -- was pulled from ReverbNation. I'll grab some from Bandcamp, some from Soundcloud, some from Spotify, some from wherever else I might find them.

So please enjoy. Come back here to the blog regularly to check it out. I will always be open for suggestion -- in fact, I will encourage it. So drop a comment on the blog or hit me up on Facebook or by email to suggest an album.

OK. A look at Sound from the Underground:

Pogo Funk recorded this as a six-piece band in 2003, when the band had been building momentum for four years. But tragedy struck shortly after that when one of its founding members died in a traffic accident.

The band vanished as a unit at that point. But a couple of the band members got the idea a couple of years ago to try to start up again. The surviving five added drummer Josh White and eventually trumpet player Sarah Webster to the mix.

And Pogo Funk is back in business, winning the SVJ Battle of the Bands Finale last week and starting work today on a second album.

The album as presented here is a little different than the original CD. One track from the CD is missing. And the last two tracks here weren't on the CD. Those two songs, "Need to Feed" and "Here We Go Again," will be re-recorded for the new album, according to vocalist Christopher "Goofy" Breck.

So here it is, the first SVJ Album of the Week. Hit the play button, get your funk/rap/metal groove on and enjoy some first-generation Pogo Funk:
